It is a wonderful feeling to be able to contribute towards the development of your nation. And what better way to be initiated into it than to be able to spend a week in a rural village and interact with villagers, identifying the gaps in financial inclusion and finding ways to bridge the gap.
The programme required us to spend a week in a village, and we chose Akalpoush. My ancestors belonged to this village and it was an honour to see it developing right before our very eyes. Anirban Bhattacharya, my colleague and friend, was my assigned partner for this project. Together we studied the lifestyle of the villagers and their credit viability. The village was not totally unbanked. It had a customer service point of SBI and a business correspondent visited twice a week. The nearest bank branches were 5km and 16km from the village.
The report and website detailing our entire experience is provided on http://debobeena2001.wixsite.com/rbi-rural-immersion and here you'll find some of the picturesque views we were able to enjoy that week.
Please be kind enough to leave your comments below. I would like to get an opinion on how the situation in Indian villages can be improved and how we can become a 100% financially included village.
Thanks!
